Popping up a storm

Just wanted to post a little blog to say a big thank you to everyone who came to the two Frocking Fabulous pop ups last week.  We visited MPG media buying agency and Red Bull, which was a stormer.  Slightly pooped but buoyed up by the great feedback from all the girls who came along. As one customer said, ‘Shopping in the office! Does it get any better than that?’

We’re on the hunt for more places to pop so if you think a vintage sale would go down well at your workplace, please get in touch.

Lucy In Disguise: a diamond vintage find

If you live in or near London, check out Lily Allen and sister Sarah’s new vintage shop, Lucy in Disguise.  As inviting for vintage virgins as it is for seasoned collectors, this place is AMAZING.

Where to begin?  Well firstly it’s a cut above your average vintage shopping experience.  This is five star stuff. The Covent Garden boutique is beautiful – spacious, light and airy with clothes arranged by decade for easy navigation. Every piece is labelled Lucy in Disguise, adding to the boutique feel. The staff are approachable and friendly and couldn’t be more helpful. And the stock! The buyers have been all over the world to source and it shows.

Floaty 50s prom dresses sit alongside classic Ossie Clark creations in a glamorous collection of unique pieces perfect for that special occasion.  It’s not cheap (average price £200-300) but it knocks the socks off its high end high street neighbours. My favourite find was a 60s gold brocade mini dress with funky lime green lining for £125.

Once the boy bit with the Playstation opens, expect to spend hours in this vintage heaven.  A fantasy fashion experience perfect for anyone with an appreciation for beautiful beautiful clothes.

Saturday day and night

So I caved and bought my first vintage finds for the summer!  Decided to capture the floral trend with a silk top from eBay.  Then once the floodgates opened I found this secondhand gold and white leather lovely to keep all my bits in.  Teaming these with year-old TopShop harems, last season’s Urban Outfitters heels and my favourite Kenneth Jay Lane necklace made for a very happy fashion day.

So far, not buying ‘new’ things hasn’t proved half as hard as I thought. It’s also a great challenge to try and find 2010 trends in secondhand form, and proves that fashion really is one big cycle.

Let’s see what next week brings…!

Cherry picked

This is the outfit chosen for Wednesday’s Cherry Picked event.  70s summer dress and Alexa-like tan bag both from Clerkenwell Vintage Fayre, accessorised with charity shop belt, new look studded sandals and necklace from Kenneth Jay Lane.

Out with the old, in with the old

Just listed a load of clothes on Ebay.  Given my pledge, reducing my wardrobe may seem like madness but to me it makes perfect sense.  If I’m going to buy secondhand only, might as well share the love.  Plus it gives me much needed funds for non-new purchases to see me through my vintage summer.

Six sales and counting!  Most popular item so far?  These vintage Levi’s cut offs.  Very Alexa.  Very Glasto.  Very short!

A vintage summer

In June 2010, I gave up a well paid job in PR to concentrate on my passion for fashion, launching frockingfabulous.com – a vintage clothes site. Now it’s time to put my (lack of) money where my mouth is!

To prove that women can look great and stay on trend without buying anything ‘new’, I’ve renounced the shops for a season.  This means no new clothes.  It means buying only pre-loved (secondhand) fashion, be it bona fide vintage or charity shop chic.  I can wear existing first-hand clothes from my wardrobe but I can’t as much as look at the hottest stock in Top Shop or Selfridges or Reiss…

Can a fashion obsessed girl survive on recycled clothes alone?  I’ll keep you posted.

Reasons to love vintage: No1

10 years ago Sadie Frost kicked off a modern vintage obsession when she wore a simple but beautiful pre-loved dress to the Oscars.  She looked fresh, funky and original, just like her dress.

And, like all good vintage, her look has stood the test of time. Sadie’s effort continues to pop up in ‘best dressed’ charts today.  Nicely done.
